On November 8, 2024, Tint Journal celebrated another edition of the magazine’s reading series “Tinted Tales.” Held in a hybrid way, the reading took place at Café Erde in Graz, Austria, and was simultaneously livestreamed via Tint’s YouTube channel (post-watch “Tinted Tales | Fall ’24” here). Four authors previously published in Tint Journal performed their prose and poetry live on stage, two more joined from abroad via a live video call, and one writer participated as open list guest. Here’s a little summary of the lively evening on translingual literature.
Exactly one year after the presentation of Tint’s first print volume Tinted Trails, the journal organized another get-together of authors who write primarily in English as their second language in Graz, a rather small town on a global level and yet, the second largest city of Austria.
For the series “Tinted Tales,” the magazine’s past contributing writers are invited to apply for a reading slot, either on-site or online. This time, the number of applicants was very high, and thus it was possible to put together quite an international ensemble.
Lucy Braun (Germany), Bora Hah (South Korea), Klau Stępień (Poland/Belgium), and Nikola Živković Takšev (Serbia) joined “Tinted Tales | Fall ’24” on-site; Gabriela Halas (Czech Republic/Canada) and Saheed Sunday (Nigeria) took part in the event from their current homes in British Columbia and Lagos, respectively. From the first performance onward, the readers captured the audience with their diverse narratives ranging from themes such as love and grief to female empowerment and the struggles of immigration. Since its first edition in 2019, a key aspect of the “Tinted Tales” reading series has been that one slot is reserved for a writer who has not yet appeared in Tint Journal. Following an open call, the event organizers Andrea Färber and Lisa Schantl decided to award Aung Zaw Myo with this edition’s open list slot. Aungg is a literary writer and translator from Myanmar, currently based in Vienna, and performed his fictionalized essay on queer protest in Graz.
Followers of Tint’s readings might have recognized another pattern: Every time, a musician or a small band is invited to add an additional interdisciplinary layer to the occasion. For “Tinted Tales | Fall ’24,” the Graz-based band Livin’ Vintage prepared a duo set with front singer Mary Pommer and drummer Marcell Bodo. They shared their tunes with the audience in the beginning, before and after the break, and at the end, and undoubtedly left everyone with an extra cap of ESL glitter.
For those who missed this edition of “Tinted Tales,” the livestream will remain available on YouTube until further notice. If you enjoy the reading series, please consider giving to Tint Journal, so that further editions can be made possible. You can do so easily by checking the journal out on Ko-fi or Patreon.
We’d like to thank everyone who came and celebrated ESL literature with us, and hope to see you again very soon!
