The eighth edition of “Tinted Tales,” the signature reading series hosted by Tint Journal, took place once again in a hybrid way. English literature fans residing in the magazine’s hometown Graz, Austria, were invited to join on-site at Café Erde, one of the vegan hotspots in town. The magazine’s international readership was invited to join online via a livestream of Tint’s YouTube channel. The recording of this livestream is available here, for everyone to post-watch in case they missed the reading, would like to watch a performance again, or for the pure fun of it.

This time, five authors who had already been published by Tint as well as one open list guest joined the event as performers. Yet again a local musician contributed to the atmospheric well-being of everyone involved. Here’s a little summary of what was going on.

After a musical intro by singer-songwriter Misty Moon and editor-in-chief Lisa Schantl’s welcoming words, the first reader of the evening — Susmita Paul (India/Austria) — shared a previously unpublished text on the theme of grief with the audience. Her performance was followed by Delight Ejiaka (Nigeria), who joined online from her current base in Las Vegas, and presented an excerpt from her story “How to Be a Man” (Tint Fall ‘24).

The third spot was filled by Kinga Tóth (Hungary), who joined the event as open list guest after successfully applying for this position. Kinga is a writer, a visual and sound poet, a performer, teacher, and a translator who works in Hungarian, German, and English. It was an honor to welcome her with her poem “Crocodile HuMan” on our tinted stage.

After a short break, the evening continued with readings by Nastya Kovalchuk (Russia), published in Tint Spring ‘22, Nadir Jabur (Iraq/Canada), published in Tint Spring ‘24, and Caro Kuba (Austria), whose work appeared in several Tint issues already. The biographies of the individual writers can be retrieved in the magazine’s Our Writers section.

Eventually, Misty Moon closed the evening for everyone listening and watching with another song, and those who came in person were invited to mingle for a bit longer. We’d like to thank everyone who celebrated ESL literature with us, at the café or online, and hope to see you again very soon!

For those who missed this edition of “Tinted Tales,” the livestream will remain available until further notice.

If you enjoy the reading series, please consider giving to Tint Journal, so that further editions can be made possible. You can do so easily by checking the journal out on Ko-fi or donate directly via PayPal. Immense gratitude!
